Lloyd Plenert

February 27, 1934 — December 5, 2020

Stilwell, Kansas

Lloyd L. Plenert of Stilwell, KS passed away on Saturday, December 5th, 2020 at the age of 86.   His was a life well lived and he will be greatly missed.  He is remembered as a man who was devoted to his faith, family and friends.  Lloyd always had time for others and to lend a hand.  He was a “jack of all trades” and master of most.  He had to be busy building things like his garage, his grandchildren’s cradle, file cabinets, side tables, and many other beautiful and useful pieces.   In his spare time, he repaired TVs, computers, cars, lawn mowers, appliances, did electrical work and almost any other fix-it job people asked him to do.

Lloyd loved to work in the yard, travel and spend time with his family and friends.  He was active in Indian Heights United Methodist Church, serving on many committees and as treasurer for 13 years.  He was also active in his community, doing charity work like the annual Crosslines Christmas Store and serving as treasurer for his neighborhood home owner’s association for many years.

Lloyd was born on February 27th, 1934 to Arnold and Marie Plenert and grew up on a farm north of Lehigh, KS.  His mother passed away when he was 7 and his father married Sara Epp when he was 12.  He had one brother and three sisters.

He attended a country school and graduated from Lehigh High School in 1952.  After high school, Lloyd worked at a dairy farm before he was welcomed into the U.S. Army.  He served in a medical unit in Korea.  After he was discharged, he worked for a Ford dealership before attending and graduating from Central Technical College in Kansas City, MO in 1961.  He had a successful 35-year career as an engineer in the telephone industry with United Telephone Company which later became Sprint.

He married Vera Weyand on Feb 2nd, 1958.  They celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary this year.

He is survived by his wife, Vera, sons Mark and Matthew Plenert, daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Maurice Barkley, grandchildren Jordan and Alec Barkley (all of Overland Park KS), sisters Arnette Duerksen (Delmar) and Sarita Duerksen (John) of McPherson, KS, sister-in-law Sue Plenert of Buhler, KS and 11 nieces and nephews and their families.

He was preceded in death by his mother Marie, father Arnold, second mother Sara, sister Evelyn Ewert, brother Vernon Plenert, brother-in-law Harley Ewert, nephew Robert Ewert, and niece-in-law Kay Ewert.
