Mrs. Loraine Hanscum
November 20, 1914 — July 1, 2012
LORAINE B. HANSCUM, age 97 of Westwood, Kansas passed away July 1, 2012 at her home. Loraine was born Nov. 20, 1914 in Kansas City, Missouri to Clinton and Nanthly Smith. She married John L. (Larry) Hanscum in 1933. They were married for 60 years and raised 3 children Judy Fox, John Jr. and Marti Dobbe.
Loraine worked as a cartographer for the U.S. Army Map Services for 22 years. She was active in the choir, a church deacon, and various church activities first at Roanoke Christian Church and then later at Village Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed traveling the world, painting and gardening.
Loraine spent the last 15 months of her life, living with her daughter Marti, where she had the opportunity to be surrounded by family and friends daily. The family would like to thank Loraine's caregiver Julie Erwin for her endless love and care.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Larry, daughter Judy, brothers Elwin and Bill Smith. She is survived by son John L. Hanscum Jr. (Betty) of Kansas City, Kansas, daughter Marti Dobbe of Westwood, Kansas, brother Bob (Fern) Smith of Lynchberg, Virginia, 8 grandchildren Cindy Kits, Jennie Stein, Chris Cahill, Wendy Corona, Julie Fox, Jeff Dobbe, Cheryl Dobbe and TJ Hanscum, 11 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, July 5, 2012 at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf, Overland Park, KS 66210. The family will receive friends at 10 a.m. before the service hour. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to Loraine B. Hanscum Memorial Fund.
