Lucy Breitenstein

Lucy Meinhardt Grice Breitenstein, 90, Overland Park, KS, passed away on November 12, 2017.
Lucy Breitenstein was born October 21, 1927 in Newbury, KS, the daughter of John Meinhardt and Dena Tillman Meinhardt. The family moved to St. Mary’s where she attended Immaculate Conception Grade and High School. She attended Washburn University where she was a member of Phi Sigma Iota, International Foreign Language Honor Society.
Lucy worked at the National Bank of Topeka and later worked as a docent/tour guide at the Kansas Museum of History for 25 years. She also served on the boards of the Mulvane Art Museum and Topeka Art Guild. Lucy was a strong advocate for all children, focusing on education in areas of history, art and language by volunteering throughout her life. Her volunteer activities included being a teacher of Folk Art, tutoring German, a Great Books leader, assisting in school libraries and participating on a task force for learning disabilities. Lucy was a talented artist. In addition to watercolor painting she demonstrated her creative eye in designing artistic quilts.
On February 22, 1952 she married Alfred D. Grice and they were the parents of five children, Linda Gaulding (William, dec.) Lenexa, KS, Cara McNair (Joe, Jr.), Overland Park, KS, Kim Ross, (Castle Rock, CO), Mary Smith (Chad), Lawrence, KS, Alfred (Edna), Chino, CA. Alfred passed away in 1960 of acute Leukemia. She married Joe Breitenstein, (dec), November 1963 and they had one son, Joseph A. Breitenstein (Overland Park, KS).
Lucy’s grandchildren include, Shawn Walker, Sam Gualding, Magnum Gaulding(dec.), Joe McNair, John McNair, Dr. Adam Ross, Emily Ross, Alex Grice and step granddaughter Kyra Gilpen Weaver. She had two great grandchildren, Ashley and Stephanie Walker.
Lucy was a member of Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Topeka, Kansas. Services will be held there on Saturday, Nov.18th at 10:30AM.
In lieu of flowers, donations made be made to the Kansas Museum of History, Department of Education in Topeka, KS.
