Mrs. Lucy Mantz

Lucy C Mantz passed away on 26th January, 2010 at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Kansas City, MO. A private Graveside Service will be held Monday, February 1, at Johnson County Memorial Gardens, 11200 Metcalf, at 11:30. Following that, a Memorial Service celebrating the life of Lucy Mantz will be held at The Village Church, 6641 Mission Road at 1 P.M. in the Sanctuary.
Visitation will be on Sunday, January 31st from 3 to 5 at D. W. Newcomer’s Sons Johnson County Chapel at 11200 Metcalf, Overland Park, Kansas. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the KU Endowment Fund or Head Start of Shawnee Mission, Inc, 8155 Santa Fe Drive, Overland Park, KS 66204-3607.
Lucy was born in Cheyenne, Wyoming to Thomas J. and Anna A. Caros. After graduation from high school she worked in the Capital building in Cheyenne, and later moved to Washington D.C. to work for the Department of the Army. Lucy was transferred to the Signal Corp and was sent to the British West Indies where she met her future husband, Frank A. Mantz Jr., M.D., a Major in the U.S. Army. The couple was married at the Washington Cathedral on July 19th, 1944.
Dr. Mantz’s Army career took them to Washington D.C., Battle Creek, MI, San Francisco, CA, Panama, Boston, MA and Denver, CO. In 1954 Dr. Mantz retired from the Army and the family moved to Prairie Village, Kansas. They have lived in the area ever since when not at their retirement home in Vero Beach, FL.
In 1970 Lucy graduated from the University of Missouri – Kansas City, having earned her degree in Sociology. Lucy was a member of The Village Church and Brookridge Country Club. She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, her sisters, Zoe Smith, Helen Stamos and Bessie Duncan and her son-in-law James D. Byram. She leaves her daughter Helen Byram of Lighthouse Point, FL, granddaughter Susan Hayes and husband Daniel C. Hayes, and granddaughter Sarah Poppe and husband, Army Major Carl A Poppe. Lucy is also survived by five great-grandchildren; Erin and Caimin Hayes and Keaton, Grant and Vaughn Poppe.
