Madena Heath Wilt passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 30th at 1:00 AM at Overland Park Nursing and Rehab Center. She was at the grand age of 102 years, 6 months and 12 days. Madena was born on March 18th, 1913 at the home of her maternal grandmother in Chanute, Ks to John J. Heath and Letha I. Slack Heath, the youngest child after her brother and sister. The family lived in Piqua, Ks until moving to Topeka when she was five, where her father helped construct the Santa Fe Railroad office building, then on to Kansas City, Ks when she was twelve. She attended Central Jr. High School, graduated from Wyandotte High School Class of 1931 and from KCKS Junior College in 1933.
At Wyandotte, Madena was on the tennis team and played independent basketball and softball. She also bowled well into her eighties, played bridge through the years, and loved to read, especially mystery novels.
Her first employment was at Kansas Service Grocers, 16th & Central Kansas City, Ks (later known as Associated Wholesale Grocers) where she met her future husband George G. Wilt. They were married over 40 years until he died in 1977. Madena was a member for over 50 years at Roanoke Presbyterian Church where she was a deacon and elder. When Roanoke closed, she joined Southridge Presbyterian Church in Roeland Park, Ks.
Since 2008 Madena resided at Overland Park Place independent living where she made many dear friends among the other residents and the caring staff.
Besides her parents and siblings, Madena was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Arthur J. Ryan, George’s siblings and in-laws, most recently her brother-in-law Charles Agnew who also resided at Overland Park Place.
She is survived by daughter Susan F. Ryan, grandchildren Becky and Mike Ferguson, great grandchildren Ryan & Rachel, David and Caryl Ryan, great grandchildren Jack & Ava, Kevin Ryan, great grandchildren Nicholas & Hallie. Son and “daughter” William G. Wilt and Vicki, grandchildren Heath and Nicole Wilt, great grandchildren Asher & Brooks and in November another baby boy, Blake and Anna Wilt, great grandchild Greyson. Also, surviving is her brother-in-law Frank Wilt and his wife Sandy, many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
Private graveside service will be Monday, October 5th at Johnson County Memorial Gardens. A memorial service will be 4:00 pm Tuesday, October 6th at Johnson County Funeral Chapel 11200 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, KS 66210, with a reception to follow.
