Marjorie Eileen Compton

Marge Compton, age 81, of Overland Park Kansas died in her home Monday, January 25, 2010 after a 20-year battle with MS, and more recently ovarian cancer.

Marjorie Eileen Compton was born in East Alton, IL on April 6, 1928 to Gertrude Cooper-Johnson and Elmer Johnson of East Alton, IL.

Marjorie attended school in East Alton and after graduation worked at Western Cartridge Company from 1946 to 1960 as a secretary. She married Tanner H. Compton on December 15, 1950, 3 days before the Army deployed him to Korea. In 1960 Marge retired and they moved to Overland Park where Tanner opened a branch office for his company.

Marge was soon very active raising her children Bob and Patty, and led a full and active life. She was involved with the Lyric Opera auxiliary and volunteered at Trinity Lutheran Hospital where she helped with baby pictures. She also worked with Cub Scouts, Brownies, and Girl Scouts, the PTA and several parent auxiliary groups including band, flag teams, fraternity, her Bethany Lutheran Circle and many others.

Marge enjoyed traveling with Tanner to numerous conventions and business meetings. After purchasing a home at the Lake of the Ozarks in 1969, Marge spent many memorable vacations there with her family and friends.

Marge was also well known for her hospitality and wonderful cooking, monthly card clubs, craft clubs and progressive dinners. Marge loved her family and will be remembered most for her personable, proud and generous nature, and her constant good mood and sense of humor.

Most recently, Marge loved spending time with her 5 grandchildren, watching them grow and enjoying their many activities.

She was preceded in death by her parents Gertrude and Elmer Johnson and grandsons James and Timothy Mader.

Left to treasure her memory are her husband of 59 years Tanner H. Compton, her children Robert Compton and Christine Crawford Compton of Overland Park, KS and Patricia Compton Mader and James Mader of Prairie Village KS; Grandchildren Lauren Catherine, Alexandra Marie, and William Tanner Compton, and Danielle Christine and Rebecca Nicole Mader; Her Sister Shirley McCune of Wood River, IL., and her sister-in-law Rose Marie Compton Kuchta of Edwardsville, IL.

Services will be held at Bethany Lutheran Church, 9101 Lamar Overland Park, KS on Friday January 29th at 11AM, with visitation at the church before the service from 9AM to 11AM. Interment will be at Pleasant Valley Cemetery, 9500 W. 159th St. Stanley, KS.

Family and friends are invited to Bethany Lutheran Church for lunch after the interment service.

Memorials are suggested to the Marjorie E. Compton Memorial Fund at Bethany Lutheran Church.
