On July 29, 2014 Margaret (Peggy) Julia Rafter passed away at Garden Terrace, Overland Park, Kansas from complications related to early onset dementia (Alzheimer’s). She was 69 years of age. Her husband of 33 years, Edward, was by her side. Margaret preferred to be greeted as Peggy by family and friends.
Peggy was born on June 9, 1945 in New York, New York. She was the oldest of three children born to Margaret and Jose Arnulfo Villareal.
Peggy found a passion in teaching through her New York public school education beginning at PS 89 and continuing through Hunter College and Bernard Baruch, ultimately achieving two Masters degrees, one in Biology and the other in Education.
Peggy’s teaching work began at Seward Park High School in biology and advanced placement biology. She achieved the position of Assistant Principle of Science at Manhattan Center for Science and Mathematics before retiring in 1995.
Peggy moved with her husband to Overland Park, Kansas and worked with him in building an engineering consulting firm and technical services organization. Her background and skills in education were the foundation for the development of technical curriculums used to educate on the installation, use and maintenance of stationary battery systems.
Her true passion however, has always been with health and wellness and she pursed these through her desire to understand holistic healing arts. Yoga and meditation became a fundamental part of her daily life. Peggy achieved the distinction of becoming a Reiki Master and was certificated in Healing Touch and Craniosacral Therapy. Peggy believed in the needs of the whole human being. Peggy was also passionate about social causes and gave of both her time and monies to many charities and community efforts including Don Bosco and Operation Breakthrough, both are Kansas City groups working with those in need.
Her husband, her sister Elizabeth, her brother Michael and her godmother Aunt Rose survive Peggy.
Memorial services will be held and Newcomers Funeral Chapel, located at College Blvd and Metcalf Avenue, Overland Park, Kansas at 4PM on Tuesday, August 5th.
