MARGARET G. SIMS
MARGARET GENEVIEVE SPELMAN SIMS passed away at her home at The Rose Estates in Overland Park, Kansas on September 27, 2010. She was born on November 29, 1918 to Samuel Spelman and Lyda Prowell Spelman in Sturgeon, Missouri where she grew up and graduated from high school. Margaret attended Christian College (now Columbia College) in Columbia, Missouri, and Kirksville State Teacher’s College/Truman State University in Kirksville, Missouri. In her earlier years Margaret was employed as a teacher in a one-room rural school, and later as a legal secretary. At a very young age, following the death of her mother, Margaret lived in the home of her aunt, Ora Spelman Stewart and her husband, Thaddeus Warren Stewart. As a result, Margaret had three wonderful parents. On September 20, 1941, Margaret married Elbert J. Sims of Sturgeon, Missouri who survives her. Margaret with her husband E. J. (“Charlie”) lived a full and productive life. E.J. was employed by Panhandle Eastern Pipe Line Company for 41 years and lived in numerous towns along the pipeline including Mexico, Missouri, Guymon, Oklahoma, Liberal Kansas, Hugoton, Kansas, Paola Kansas, Newton, Kansas, Emporia, Kansas, and Overland Park, Kansas. Margaret was a steady partner in all of E.J.’s many moves. Margaret leaves her loving husband, E.J.; three sons, Thad Sims and wife Elnora of Dallas, Texas, Bruce Sims and wife Vicki of Leawood, Kansas and Phil Sims of Overland Park, Kansas. Also surviving are four granddaughters, Amy Sims Jones and husband Randall, Ashley Sims Coleman and husband Clinton, Neely Nicole Sims, and Lacey Sims Gruenebaum and husband Andy. Margaret is also survived by six great-grandchildren, Nathan, Nora, Noble and Naomi Jones and Emily and Sarah Coleman, as well as several nieces and nephews. By her example Margaret instilled the qualities of perseverance, self-discipline, faithfulness and generosity in the lives of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren; and she leaves a legacy of unfailing love and steadfast loyalty to her family. The family gratefully acknowledges the devoted care she received from the staff at The Rose Estates and Heartland Hospice. A visitation with the family will be held from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. on Saturday, October 2nd with a memorial service at 11:00 a.m., both at the Valley View United Methodist Church, 8412 W. 95th Street; Overland Park, Kansas 66212.
