Marilyn Lou Maudlin Mayberry, in her 86th year, passed away peacefully in the early hours of July 22, 2016 after a brief illness with her son Tom and his wife Debbie at her side.
Marilyn was born on July 19, 1930 in Chicago, Illinois to Viola and Blaine Maudlin. She graduated from Lake View High School and attended Northwestern University where she majored in British History, was a member of Gamma Phi Beta sorority, and where she met John A. “Bud” Mayberry. They were married in 1951.
During the 1950s and early 60s, Marilyn and Bud followed work throughout the midwest an northeast United States including Maine and Massachusetts. During this period they welcomed the arrival of sons John Blaine (1958) and David Robert (1960). In 1963, they moved to Leawood, Kansas, and Marilyn gave birth to Thomas Orville (1964).
As her sons grew and entered school, Marilyn became actively involved in the PTA, much to the chagrin of educators and parents with what were considered progressive points of view in those days. She was a great lover of art and volunteered as “picture lady” at Brookwood elementary where John, David, and Tom would see there mother introduce great works of art to their classmates. She volunteered as a docent at the Nelson Gallery, and sold antiques at Au Marché on the Country Club Plaza.
Marilyn saw her sons married and was an loving mother-in-law to John’s wife Lori (né Hoekstra), David’s wife Mara (né Lobby), and Debbie (né Bowen).
There are so many memories of Marilyn. She was constantly trying to develop in her sons an appreciation for art and culture. During family vacations in the old blue Buick station wagon, Marilyn had a captive audience and would read books aloud. This happened all across the United States. Forced viewings of old black and white movies on television were commonplace and now bring a smile. She was a wonderful and generous mother and grandmother. Marilyn particularly loved dogs, and in addition to asking after her grandchildren John, Megan, Carolyn, Maureen, Elizabeth and Emily knew she would always inquire after the family pets and would dote on them when she visited.
Over the years Marilyn was very active in the Leawood Woman’s Club, as a Gamma Phi Beta alumnus, and as pretty decent player in her bridge group.
Marilyn’s passing was a shock to all of us. She was very much loved and will be very much missed.
