Marjory Mordy (Nelson)

Marjory Ellen Nelson Mordy (“Marjie”), age 91, died on March 10, 2018 at Kingswood Health Center, Kansas City, Missouri.

Marjie was born October 25, 1926, in Kansas City, MO, to John P. Nelson and Lillie Johnson Nelson, and was a lifelong resident of this community. She graduated from Hale H. Cook School, Southwest High School and Baker University–where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta.

After college, Marjie worked in commercial art and interior decorating until her marriage to James C. Mordy in 1951. She and Jim raised three children whose activities were supported and encouraged through her involvements in their PTAs, Scouts, music, dancing and sports.

Marjie’s life was centered around her family and her church, Broadway United Methodist (now Keystone), where she was a member for 85 years–since 1932. She sang in the church choir for 70 years, taught church school classes, chaired committees, dinners and bazaars, organized the quilting group and the Broadway Child Enrichment Center. She was an active member and an officer of the Pathfinders Class and the OK Klub.

Marjie served on district and conference committees of the United Methodist Church, and on the boards of Della Lamb Community Services, Spofford Home for children, and the Office of Creative Ministries. She was editor of the United Methodist Women conference newsletter for ten years.

She regularly attended the annual School of Missions of her UMW and many of the quadrennial UMW national assembly meetings. In 1996 she was a delegate to the World Methodist Conference in Brazil. Marjie was a member of the John Wesley Society of Kansas City’s Saint Paul School of Theology and received the President’s Award from that school in 2011.

Marjie loved people, her Swedish heritage, her dogs and cats, and KC Royals baseball. She enjoyed music, singing, crafting, sewing, quilting, collecting dolls, reading, traveling, taking photographs, and making scrapbooks. She and Jim visited all fifty states and twenty foreign countries, but she thrived on being home near her family and friends.

Marjie was preceded in death by her parents, a baby sister and four-year-old brother. She is survived by her husband James C. Mordy of Kansas City, and their three children, Jean Mordy Jongeling and husband Tom of Kansas City, Rebecca (Becky) Mordy King and husband Richard Zinn of Walnut Creek, CA, son James N. Mordy and wife Rhonda of Villanova, PA, grandchildren Max and Riley King, Emily and Julianna Zinn, Taylor and Arianna Mordy, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, April 28 at Keystone United Methodist Church, 406 W 74th St, Kansas City, MO 64114, with reception to follow at Kingswood Senior Living Community, 10000 Wornall Rd, Kansas City, MO 64114.
