Martin B. Zwego, 88, of Overland Park, Kansas passed away on January 26, 2008 at the Menorah Medical Center. Marty was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Ray, and his sister Violet S. Holland. Marty is survived by his wife of 65 years, Betty Jean Zwego, his four daughters, Constance Jean Zwego of Bonner Springs, KS, Patricia Margaret Zweifel of McLean, VA, Nancy Anne Taylor of Redstone, CO and Marilyn Stella Calora of Oldsmar, FL. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Manda Jane VanAuken, North Kansas City, MO. Nathaniel Hoyt Taylor, Carbondale, CO, Samuel Clay Zweifel, Seattle, WA and David Martin Zweifel, Blacksburg, VA. Marty was born on July 4, 1919 in Kansas City, Kansas to Martin W. and Stella V. Zwego. Marty graduated from Bishop Ward High School in 1937. He joined the US Navy in 1942, serving as aviation machinist mate 2nd class during WWII. He married Betty Jean Humble in 1942 and they made their home in Kansas City, KS Upon leaving the Navy, Marty and his brother, Raymond W. Zwego, Sr. opened 101 Rental, CO at 18th & Ridge in Kansas City, KS which he owned and operated for 52 years. During that time, Marty was a member in the American Rental Association and American Legion. Marty's love of water sports and boating lead them to spend 28 summers at their home in the Lake of the Ozarks. He was an avid motor coach enthusiast. He and Betty spent 20 years traveling throughout the United States and spending winters in Yuma, AZ. Together they traveled throughout the world seeing such destinations as Australia, England, New Zealand, the West Indies and Hawaii. Visitation will be at D.W. Newcomers Johnson County Chapel, 112th & Metcalf on Sunday, January 27 from 5-7 p.m. Memorial Services will be held at the D.W. Newcomers Chapel at 112th & Metcalf on Monday, January 28 at 10 a.m. Commital Services will be held immediately following at Shawnee Mission Memorial Gardens, 23215 W. 75th at the southwest corner of 75th St. and Highway K7. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations are made to the Statue of Liberty - Ellis Island Foundation, 17 Battery Place #210, New York, NY 10004- 3507 or www.ellisisland.org.
