Mary-Alice Bacheler Amelung, 86, passed away April 3, 2010 at Aberdeen Village, Olathe, Kansas, of natural causes.
She was born May 15, 1923 in Providence, Rhode Island, and grew up in New England, where her father was a Congregational (U.C.C.) minister.
She graduated from Florida State University in Tallahassee with a degree in Religious Social Work.
She married Frederick Amelung in Sept. 1946. While her husband completed his education at KU, she worked at Haskell Indian Institute in Lawrence, KS. She worked for the Johnson County Library System for more than 20 years and served as the head librarian at the Oak Park Branch. After retirement, she became known as "Mrs. A.", a professional storyteller, to children throughout Johnson County for over ten years.
Mary-Alice was an active member of Colonial Church, Prairie Village, KS for over 50 years. Other organizations that she belonged to includel the Older Women’s League, and Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority.
She enjoyed gardening, cooking, traveling and living life to the fullest.
She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Karen and Glen Froelich and Valerie and Kevin Cable, all of Lenexa, KS and a grand-daughter, Meredith M. Cable of Knoxville, TN. Her son, Theodore Amelung, died in 1994. Her husband Fred passed away in 2002. Her parents, Theodore and Belle Bacheler, and her brother Theodore Bacheler also predeceased her.
She is also survived by her sisters Hope Miller of South Chatham, MA and Cynthia Babbitt, Nashville, TN, and by many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Services will be at 10:00 AM on Saturday, April 10th, at Colonial Church, 7039 Mission Road, Prairie Village. Cremation. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Ted Amelung Scholarship Fund at Colonial Church.
