Mary Louise Schmidt, 92, of Overland Park, KS passed away on March 22nd, 2010 at her daughter and son-in-law’s home in Overland Park, Kansas. She was born May 28, 1917 to Edward J. McKee and Anna M. Randolph of Marysville, Kansas. Her five siblings preceded her in death: Jessie, Cecil (Zeke), Merlin, Vesta and Ruth as well as her husband, Gordon D. Schmidt.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Chip and Anita Osborn of Overland Park, and grandson Tyler Harnett of Lawrence, KS. She also considered her dear stepchildren and step grandchildren as her own: Dr Kathy McConahay and her husband Mark; Dr Bryan Harnett and his wife Moira; Townes Osborn Miller and her husband Charles; Katherine Osborn, and Bo Osborn. Her adorable step great-grandchildren: Thomas and David McConahay, Maeve, Charlotte, and Clementine Harnett.
Mary was a lifetime bridge player, up until February 2010. She was an active member of Paseo Presbyterian Church of Kansas City, MO, for many years and Christ Episcopal Church of Overland Park, KS, in recent years. She was a member of PEO, and worked for 20 years at the Saint Joseph Hospital Auxiliary helping others.
For the past 15 years, she lived at The Grand Court of Overland Park where she made many dear friends and played bridge most nights. She loved all card games and played Scrabble with her best friend of 60 years, Ella Ruth Aufranc.
She grew up in Marysville, KS, but also lived in Manhattan, KS, before marrying Gordon D. Schmidt. When he went to WWII, she worked in a munitions plant in Marysville to help out the war cause. When they lived in Lincoln, Nebraska, she owned a beauty salon after completing beauty school. They also lived in Miami and Denver before settling in Kansas City because of a patent law opportunity for Gordon.
She was fortunate in her ability to travel the world with her husband, and was on every continent. She created a family legacy with summers in Estes Park, Colorado, at the YMCA of the Rockies.
Mary was renowned for her chocolate chip cookies and her gifts of chocolate to everyone she met. Her artistic talents came through in her handiwork of needlepoint and quilting. She was also the best maker of pie crusts, and even though she followed a simple recipe was able to make it flakier and better than anyone else’s.
Her legacy is her self-sacrificing nature, and her unconditional love for her family….especially her grandson Tyler, who could do no wrong and her son-in-law Chip who made her eyes light up and her heart happy. She was a masterful giver. Her career was to be the best mother and the best grandmother in the world. She reached that goal.
A Memorial Service will be at D.W. Newcomer’s Sons Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf, Overland Park, Kansas, on Saturday April 24th, 2010, at 4:00 pm. The family requests no flowers or contributions.
