Mary Elizabeth Peter, age 92, passed away on May 6, 2015, at The Forum of Overland Park. Mary was born on March 26, 1923, to Harvey and Lydia Dane on their farm outside Manhattan, Kansas. She graduated from Manhattan High School and received her teaching certificate from Kansas State University. For several years, she taught in a one-room schoolhouse.
After visiting relatives in California and needing a way home to Kansas, she caught a ride with a young man named Arthur Jarvis Peter. In 1944, they married. They lived in Inglewood, California, and worked for Douglas Aircraft. In 1943, expecting their first child, Jarv was drafted into the army during WWII. Mary returned to Kansas to be by relatives. After leaving the service, Mary and her husband settled in Manhattan, KS where a second child was born.
They moved to Fairway, Kansas, in 1950. Mary continued as a homemaker taking care of her nephew while her sister worked. She was a devoted mother and aunt. She filled her days as an active Girl Scout and Boy Scout leader and a member of Old Mission Methodist Church. After her children left home, she returned to work as an accountant with the Jones Store.
Mary liked to read and do crossword puzzles as well as playing bridge. She was a creative and supportive mother and a wonderful cook. She loved her family and enjoyed working on genealogy. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the light of her life.
She was preceded in death by her husband Jarv. She is survived by her sister Agnes Parker, nephew Jeff Hunt and wife Molly, sister- and brother-in-law Margie and Dale Wohler, two children, Marsha and husband Mike of Lenexa, KS, Michael and wife Sally of Fayetteville, GA, grandchildren, Matt Hoffman and wife Maria of Lenexa, KS, Marlo Marten and husband Brad of Overland Park, KS, Todd Peter of Fayetteville, GA, Ashley Robinson and husband Matt of Sharpsburg, GA, Shaena Green and husband Ken of Edgewood, New Mexico, great-grandchildren Madison and Makayla Hoffman, Kate and Will Marten, Cole and Peyton Robinson, Ellie and Viviana Green, and Hallie Peter.
Funeral services will be1:30pm Saturday May 9, 2015 at Johnson County Funeral Chapel. Visitation will be 12:30-1:30p.m. Burial in Johnson County Memorial Gardens.
