Mr. Maurice Jones

August 9, 1921 — February 3, 2010

Maurice Frank Jones of Prairie Village, KS, former publishing and advertising executive, died February 3, 2010, at his home. Frank, a descendant of a pioneer Missouri family, was born August 9, 1921, at Laclede (Linn County), MO. His great-grandfather Carlton Jones homesteaded a farm just north of Laclede in 1853, after returning from the California Gold rush of 1849-50.

Frank Jones lived in Columbia, MO., from age 4 to 14, moving with his parents to Kansas City, MO in 1935. Frank was a 1938 graduate of Southwest High School, and graduated in 1942 from Northwestern University, majoring in journalism and English. He served 3 ½ years in the army during World War II, from 1942 to 1944, before returning to Kansas City.

Frank was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Mary Jane (Orr) Jones; by his father Max and mother Loreta; and by his brother, Gene C. Jones.

After working as a technical writer for TWA, and as an advertising agency copy chief for several Kansas City firms, Frank co-founded the advertising firms of Selders-Jones-Covington in 1950, and Jones & Hanger, Inc. in 1955, where he was president. In 1962, Jones & Hanger, Inc. merged with Brewer Advertising, where Frank became a senior partner.

In 1965, Frank resigned to develop Bon Appetit Magazine, where he was sole owner, editor and publisher until 1970, when Bon Appetit was merged into The Pillsbury Company as a separate operating division based in Kansas City. The merger also included Bon Voyage Magazine, a sister publication in the travel field, which Jones started in 1968. When Pillsbury decided to sell the magazines in 1975, they were purchase by the publisher of Architectural Digest. Jones joined the new organization as Editor-in-Chief, later becoming Consulting Editor prior to his retirement in 1981.

Jones was a member of the Village Presbyterian Church, Phi Delta Theta fraternity, Mission Hills Country Club, and the American Society of Magazine Editors.

Frank is survived by his three beloved children and their spouses – Jeffrey C. Jones (Rosanna), Leawood, KS; Kathy K. Cunningham (Jerry), Prescott Valley, AZ; Gary M. Jones (Joy), Overland Park, KS – by three grandchildren, Lauren Kaiser (Michael); Jennifer Miller (Jordan); and Ryan Jones – and great-grandson Evan Kaiser and great-granddaughter Anna Kaiser, along with many nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held at 3:00 pm, Tuesday, February 9, at Village Presbyterian Church, 6641 Mission Rd., Prairie Village, KS. The family wishes to extend special thanks to the staff of Claridge Court. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to St. Luke’s Hospital Foundation, 4225 Baltimore, Kansas City, MO 64111, the Village Presbyterian Church or charity of your choice.
