Murel Ernest Allen, known by all as M.E., passed away September 4, 2010. At the time of his death he resided at Delmar Gardens of Lenexa. M.E. was born October 12, 1918, in Silverton , Texas. He moved with his family to Grannis,Arkansas in 1921, where he was then raised to adulthood. In 1941 M. E. married the love of his life, Margaret Brown. They were happily married for 69 years. M.E. and Margaret moved to Kansas City in 1943 and opened Allen’s Shoe Repair in 1947. They worked side by side in their business until 1985, when they retired. Their customers came from far and wide to take advantage of the brilliant craftsmanship that M.E. was known for in his shoe repair career.
Throughout his life M.E. enjoyed many and varied activities. First and foremost he and Margaret shared a love of their church, and were very active in that regard. M.E. was a dedicated Christian and an ordained deacon in the Southern Baptist Church, as well as a Sunday school teacher. At the time of his death, he was a member of Nall Avenue Baptist Church. For many years M.E. travelled throughout Kansas and Nebraska assisting churches in construction projects. M.E had a passion for travel and knowledge, and he and Margaret travelled the world, visiting 66 countries and every continent except Antarctica. In addition they visited every state in the United States. For many years M.E. enjoyed their vacation home on Bull Shoals Lake, where he was an avid boater and a remarkable water skier, even well in to his 70’s. He was a great host and loved to see family and friends visit there. M.E. was well known for his love of his home, and spent a great deal of time working outside on landscaping. He loved to read and did it often, in addition to his daily bible readings. Never one to hide his opinions, M.E loved to debate political and social issues. He did it well, often, and intelligently.
M.E. was a great friend to many and throughout his life was regarded as someone who could be turned to in time of need. He was a devoted father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He was a wonderful husband and very proud of his 69 years of marriage.
M.E. set a great example for many as a self made person from humble beginnings, and his strength of character and success in life will never be forgotten by those who knew him.
We love you, M.E. and though we are deeply saddened by your passing, we know you are now at rest, and with the Lord that you served so faithfully for so long.
M.E. is survived by his wife Margaret of Lenexa, Kansas, two sons, David Allen of Kansas City, MO and Jerry Allen(Jolene) of The Woodlands, Texas, Gerry Ross(Pam) of Two Harbors, MN, who was like another son, grandchildren Todd Allen, Kimberly Naughton(Joe), Stefanie Fast(Ryan) and great grandchildren Morgan, Jackson, Kassie, Reese, Grant, and Dayle.
Services will be held Tuesday, September 7, 2010 at D.W. Newcomers, 112th and Metcalf, Overland Park, Kansas. Visitation will be at 1.00 p.m followed by services at 2.00 p.m.
