Mel served with the Yankee Division 101st Infantry, Company B in the European Theatre during WW II. He participated in all 5 major battles, including Omaha Beach and Battle of the Bulge. He received the Purple Heart with two oak leaf clusters, the Bronze Star, Combat Infantry Badge and the Normandy Freedom Medal. He was very proud of his service for his country. He married Patricia Trudel in 1955 and moved to the Overland Park area in 1957, where they raised their family and became involved in the community.. Mel belonged to the American Legion Post 370, where he was Department of Kansas Vice- Commander, the VFW Post 846 and the DAV. Mel was a loving husband and father. He was the life of the party and always had a joke. He enjoyed caring for his yard and always had something to tinker with. He found the greatest joy in his 4 grandchildren. He loved them more than anything and was so very proud of each one of them. They will be blessed with many funny and loving memories forever. And finally to his wonderful wife Pat, words could not express what he felt; her devotion to his care in the last few years was amazing. He loved her deeply and appreciated all that she did whether he told her in words or not. All of the moments they shared were a demonstration of their commitment together. Mel and Pat just celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary.
Mel is preceded in death by his parents, his youngest son Mel Dinklage and granddaughter Jenna Marie Cox. Survivors include his wife Pat of the home, daughter Cheri' Cox (Chuck), 2 sons Dan (Texas) and Thom Dennis (Cindy) (Alabama) and Kim Crawford, grandchildren Taylor and Jordan Cox, Tiffany Dinklage and Kelsey Petty, and his beloved cat Rosie.

You will be missed by so many but never forgotten…
