Melvin went to join the Lord and Savior on September 23, 2022. Melvin was born in Colorado Springs, Colorado to Rev. I. A. Lavik and Clara B. (Gronhovd) Lavik. He was raised in Daleyville, Wisconsin. Attended Daleyville Grade School, Mount Horeb High, St. Olaf College (BA, 1953), Univ. of Florida (MS, Physics, 1956). He worked at Midwest Research Institute (1955-1978) in the Physics and Mechanical Engineering Section where he worked with solid lubricants at high temperature (red heat) and low temperature (liquid nitrogen) for use in aeronautics and space applications. He presented over 20 reviewed papers at professional meetings and published 15 articles in professional journals. Later in life he was a Life and Health Insurance agent for Lutheran Brotherhood (1978-1999) and an independent insurance agent (1999-2008). Melvin was preceded in death by his wife Norma (Lewis) Lavik, sister Agnes Iverson, brother-in-law Don Iverson, brother Harold Lavik, sister-in-law Marilyn Lavik and nephew Douglass Smith. He is survived by “Special Friend Beth Drumm,” and brother Robert Lavik, nieces Susan Iverson, Barbara Hardy, Ruth Lavik, Mary Lavik, Jane Longfield and Ellen Ruthart and nephews Jon Iverson, Robert Lavik and Tom Lavik. In lieu of flowers, donations to your favorite Macular Degeneration Organization in Mel’s honor would be appreciated.
