Michael (Mike) Conroy

July 16, 1941 — July 16, 2011

Michael Edward (Mike) Conroy, 70, of Overland Park KS, passed away Saturday, July 16, 2011. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m., Thursday, July 21 in the D.W. Newcomer’s Sons Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf Ave. A celebration of Mike’s life will be 10:00 a.m., Friday, July 22 at the chapel.
Mike was born April 30, 1941 in St. Louis, MO, attending Pattonville High School and later graduating from Southeast Missouri State University with a degree in Education. He taught physical education at Bernard Elementary School in St. Louis County where he met his wife, Janice. As his family grew, Mike chose to leave teaching and pursue a career in the insurance business, working for the Travelers Insurance Company for 38 years before retiring in 2005. After retirement, Mike regularly volunteered at Heart to Heart International, a non-profit organization that provides medication and health services to those in need.
Mike was active in his children’s lives, coaching sports teams, providing guidance, and encouraging each child to pursue his or her own dreams. As a grandfather, he enjoyed spending time with his six grandchildren and frequently incorporated them into the poems and short stories he liked to write.
Mike and his wife were world travelers – visiting over 32 countries together. Highlights included Morocco, Egypt, Ireland and Australia, but his favorite trip was to South Africa where he went on safari and was enchanted by the monkeys who watched him through the window of his lodge. He was also a crossword puzzle enthusiast, and completed the New York Times puzzle daily (in pen, he would add). He enjoyed reading, writing poems and short stories, playing dominoes and Scrabble, world history, the stock market, archaeology, Las Vegas, and baseball.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dorothy and Frank Conroy, and his aunt and uncle, Russell and Lucille Brunk. He is survived by his wife, Janice Conroy; his children Elizabeth Loudon and her husband Dan, Margaret Cusack and Joe Cusack, Michael Conroy and his wife Meghan, Julie Hubbard and her husband Grady; his grandchildren Jeff and Jade Loudon, Audrey Cusack, and Rowan, Lilly and Charlie Conroy; his brother and sister-in-law, Russ and Kathi Conroy; in-laws Carol and Jerry Poe; and his nieces Erin Conroy, Cheryl Poe and Jennifer Poe, and nephew Casey Conroy. He has enriched the lives of all of us and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
