Mildred "Midge" Gregory Stephens, passed away on January 18, 2013. A visitation will be held from 5 to 7 PM on Tuesday, January 22, 2013 with rosary beginning at 5 pm at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, KS. Services will be held at 10 am on Wednesday, January 23, 2013, also at the Johnson County Chapel. In lieu of flowers, Midge's request was donations be made to the Smile Train, P.O. Box 96231, Washington, DC 20090-6231 or thru www.smiletrain.org.
Midge was born July 21, 1918, in Edina, Missouri, to Geneva and Archie Johnston. She was raised in the Kansas City area and graduated from East High School in 1937. While in school, she was active in many sports including tennis, basketball and track. At one time she held the girl's high jump record. In her adult life she enjoyed traveling, time with family and square dancing. She and husband, Bill, formed the Happy Pairs Square Dance Club in 1960 and they danced until his passing in 1986.
In 1992, she married Jake Stephens, of Shawnee, KS. During that time she kept active with gardening and water aerobics. She divorced in 2004 and moved to Asbury Villas, in Olathe, KS. In 2010, she moved to Park Meadows Senior Living, in Overland Park, KS. Midge was a member of St. Joseph's Parish, in Shawnee, KS.
Midge was preceded in death by her parents; husband, William H. Gregory; six brothers, Glennon, John, Charlie, Archie, Robert, and Richard Johnston; two sisters, Maxine Martin and JoAnne Mayer; daughter, Judy Richardson; granddaughter, Lorrie Ann Richardson; and grandson, Michael Gregory.
She is survived by her son, William B. Gregory, of Solana Beach, CA; daughter, Diane Tiefert and husband Marty, of Lenexa, KS; son-in-law, Ellis Richardson, of Overland Park, KS; grandsons, Scott Richardson, Overland Park, KS, David Richardson and wife Ann, Kansas City, MO, and Brian Moffett and wife Kate, of Kansas City, MO; granddaughters, Ginger Silverman and husband Sam, of Redondo Beach, CA, and Megan Moffett, of Los Angeles, CA; great-grandchildren, Reese and Jonah Richardson and Maggie Silverman; sisters-in-law, Mary Johnston, of Lee's Summit, MO, and Earlene Johnston, of Independence, MO. She also leaves behind many, MANY beloved cousins, nieces and nephews and a countless number of friends who she truly treasured.
Special thanks to Catholic Community Hospice and her caregivers at Manor Care, in Overland Park. And last but not least, many thanks to her lovely, dear friends at Asbury Villas and Park Meadows that helped make her last years so enjoyable. She will be deeply missed by all that knew and loved her. Rest in peace, Mom.
