Myron Martin Apel
Myron Martin Apel of Overland Park, Kansas passed away on Monday, August 29, 2016. He was born on November 21, 1929 to the Rev. Henry and Elva Apel in Ottawa, Kansas. As a youngster the family lived in several different Kansas towns including Hope, Dwight, Yates Center, Delia, Clifton and Hoxie, Kansas. Myron participated in music and sports during his school years. In 1947 he graduated from Clifton High School. In the fall of 1947 he began his college career at the College of Emporia in Emporia, Kansas where he played football and participated in choir. He graduated in 1951 with a degree in chemistry. Upon his college graduation, he was drafted in the US Army and spent his time in Japan working with a medical team. When his tour of duty was over, he returned to the United States and continued his education at the University of Kansas where he studied microbiology. He began his career in Topeka at the Kansas State Board of Health. On August 4, 1957, he and Marilyn Svensson were married in the First Christian Church in Atchison, Kansas. While residing in Topeka, they raised their two children, David and Carol. They were members of the 1st Presbyterian Church and Myron and Marilyn were active members in the choir. Myron was actively involved with the Boy Scout Troop 7. He also loved sports and was a big KC Royals, KC Chiefs and KU Jayhawks fan. He was a football official in and around Topeka for several years and was also an usher for the University of Kansas basketball and football games. After working at Seymour Foods, Myron finished his career at Hills Pet Products, retiring in 1995. In 1999, Myron and Marilyn moved to Olathe, Kansas to be near their son, daughter and grandchildren. Surviving Myron are his wife of 59 years, Marilyn Apel; son, David Apel; daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Rich Smith; his brother, Adrian Apel; six grandchildren: Christian Apel, Savannah Apel, Parker Smith, Preston Smith, Paige Smith and Patrick Smith. A memorial service will be held at 2:00pm Tuesday September 6th in the Wesley Chapel at Church of the Resurrection United Methodist Church with a reception to follow at the church.
