Another passion was her church, where she served in a variety of positions, including choir director, elder, and for ten years, as Fellowship chair, earning the nickname "Sarge" by running an efficient, organized kitchen. She also worked as bookkeeper for the American Royal and owned an employment agency. After her marriage to Jay Shartran, she worked with him to manage his manufacturer's representative business. Together they traveled, fished, and golfed all over the world.
