MARTHA CATE (MIMI) NEWELL
Mimi Newell, 80 years old, died February 22, 2010. Mimi was born on May 4, 1929, in Dallas, Texas, to Henry Hamilton Cate and Gladys Harvin Cate, who preceded her in death. The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. on Friday, February 26, at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 6401 Wornall Terrace, Kansas City, Mo. Mimi was a proud native Texan. She grew up in Dallas, attended Hockaday School, Finch College in New York City and The University of Texas. As a youngster, she became an excellent sportswoman, an accomplished water skier, and she learned to shoot while hunting with her father and her brother, Tony. Later she became a champion trap shooter, winning the Missouri State Trap Shooting Championship in 1950. The Cate family moved to Kansas City, Mo., in 1950. This is where Mimi met and married Paul Dayton Newell in 1953. They shared a wonderful 37 years of marriage before he preceded her in death in 1990. Mimi and Paul developed many great and loyal friends who helped fill their married years with laughter and joy. Those special people became important parts of the lives of Mimi and Paul's children as well. Chip, Charlie, Nancy and Henry continue to cherish these important friendships today. Mimi will be remembered for many things. She was the consummate southern lady - always polite, kind, welcoming and perfectly dressed. Many a head turned when Mimi cruised around town in her convertible while wearing a sassy hat. Mimi loved to entertain and always did it with flair. Her talents as a hostess had much to do with her own mother's motto, "The Glory of the House is Hospitality." In every organization from the Brownies, Scouts, PTA, The Kansas City Museum, Kappa Kappa Gamma and the Holiday House Tour, the Children's Relief Association, St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, The Westport Garden Club, Pauma Valley (California) Country Club, and the Kansas City Country Club, Mimi made acquaintances who quickly became valued friends. Soon after moving to Kansas City, she worked for renowned interior decorator Peggy Sloan. Later in life, she started her own firm, H. Hamilton Interiors. She had a strong faith rooted in the Episcopal Church. Mimi was proud to have been married by and her children baptized by Earle B. Jewell, longtime rector of St. Andrew's. Her generosity of spirit was best demonstrated in her abiding love for her group of girlfriends, always referred to as simply, "The Girls." They took many trips together, played countless hands of bridge and saw dozens of movies, plays and shows. Dinners out and happy cocktail hours with her friends were some Mimi's fondest memories. For her 10 grandchildren, visits to Mimi's were the best of adventures. No game of hide-and-seek was nearly as wonderful without Mimi's southern accent in the background calling out and pretending not to see them sticking out from under the bed. Every sporting event, music recital or pep assembly was improved by Mimi's smiling face in the gallery. She adored her grandchildren and the feeling was mutual. Of all the people who will miss Mimi, none will miss her more than her four children. She was the perfect mother to them in their childhood years and the best confidante and friend to them as adults. She also found great joy in her daughters-in-law and son-in-law, considering them her very own. Mimi is survived by son Paul (Chip) D. Newell, Jr. and granddaughter Chloe; son and daughter-in-law Charlie and Kay Newell and grandchildren Rick, Courtney, Maggie and Lauren; daughter and son-in-law Nancy and Allan Stark and granddaughters Cate and Ruth, and son and daughter-in-law Henry and Cara Newell and grandchildren Audrey, Paul and Hank. She is also survived by her brother, Henry (Tony) H. Cate of Casper, Wyo. The family requests no flowers and suggests contributions to be made to Children's Mercy Hospital, St. Luke's Hospital, or the Republican National Committee.
