Norma Jack Lindsey, PhD. died on March 25, 2016 at her home. She was born in Van Zandt County, Texas in 1929, the eldest child and only daughter of Nora Velma Flovin Lindsey and Oscar Lee Lindsey. In time, there were born to this family two sons, Thomas Calvin Lindsey and Donald Lee Lindsey.
Ms. Lindsey grew up in the public schools of Texas, then attended Texas State College for Women (since renamed Texas Woman’s University) where she earned B.A. and B.S. degrees in microbiology. After working briefly as a bench microbiologist, she served one tour as a U.S. Navy communications and cryptography officer. She then returned to microbiology, a field in which she spent the rest of her working life. She earned her “MPH” degree in microbiology at the University of California Berkeley and her PhD in microbiology at Colorado State University.
Dr. Lindsey retired from the University Of Kansas School Of Medicine in 1992.
She had always read avidly and eclectically and was captivated by music, as a listener, not a performer. In retirement, she discovered the satisfaction of volunteering, especially as a tutor for adult non-readers at Literacy Kansas City.
Dr. Lindsey’s death was preceded by the deaths of her parents, her brothers Thomas and Donald, a niece Danette Lindsey, a nephew William Lindsey, and her beloved life partner, Dr. Elizabeth Wilson. She is survived by her niece Denise Sheets and her husband Lynn of Iowa, her nice Leslie Lindsey of Texas, her nephew Terry Lindsey and his wife Robin of Texas, and thirteen great-nieces and great-nephews.
