Norma Mae (Knewtson) McWherter, of Overland Park, Kansas, passed away peacefully in her sleep at her home on November 3, 2015. She was born on August 26, 1932 to Beulah Mae (Morgan) Knewtson and Arthur Andrew Knewtson in Labette County, Kansas. She was raised on their family farm northwest of Edna, Kansas and attended Prairie Hall Grade School. She graduated in the Class of 1950 from Edna High School.
She married Thomas James McWherter on December 30, 1951 in Edna, Kansas. They made their home in Coffeyville all of their married life. She was a homemaker, and also assisted her husband operating a cattle farm southwest of Coffeyville for many years.
She led a very active life. She volunteered many hours in elementary education, and was a very proud recipient of the “Honorary Life Member of the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) Award”. She was also active as a Cub Scout den mother, and her in her Church. She was a very talented seamstress, enjoying needlework, and gardening flowers and vegetables.
She was preceded in death by her husband (of 52 years) on February 13, 2004. She remained in the family home in Coffeyville for four years, then moved in 2008 to Overland Park to be closer to her children.
She is survived by her oldest son Roger Dale McWherter (Overland Park, Kansas) and his wife, Kathryn. Her youngest son Mark Kendall McWherter (Olathe, Kansas). One granddaughter Kaela Morgan McWherter of Leavenworth, Kansas. And by one sister Colene Knewtson Miller of Coffeyville, Kansas.
Thanks be to God that many years ago, she fully placed herself in the loving arms of Christ, believing that the blood and water which gushed forth from His heart was a fount of mercy for her, and all those that have trusted in Him and seek to do His will.
Services and burial will follow in Lake Creek Cemetery near Bartlett, Kansas. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made in her name to the Angel Fund at University of St. Mary in Leavenworth, Kansas.
