Mr. Norman Babcock

Dr. Norman R. Babcock passed away Saturday, August 20, 2011. A “Celebration of Life” service honoring him will be held at 11:00 am Thursday, August 25th at D.W. Newcomer’s Sons Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf, Overland Park, Kansas 66210.
Born August 7, 1918, Norm was raised on a farm near Tonganoxie, KS. He was the only child of Elsie and Olie Babcock. Norm attended a one room school through eighth grade. It was in that setting that his love for and belief in the power of education began. Accepting a teaching position in Troy, Kansas, he met and then married Florence M. Morgan on Oct. 30, 1943. During World War II, Norm enlisted in the Naval Officer Candidate School. Florence traveled with him as he trained for military service. Assigned to the USS Kenton, Norm served his country as a First Lieutenant j.g. from 1942 – 1945.
At the age of nineteen Norm began his career in education. Employed by the Leavenworth, KS School District his initial teaching experience was at Pony Creek, a one room school. In subsequent years, he served as a teacher/principal in Lenexa, assistant principal and teacher at Prairie School, principal of Indian Hills Junior High, Superintendent of Corinth School District and Asst. Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction of Shawnee Mission USD #512. Although he retired in 1981, he never stopped promoting education.
During his career Norm held the following positions; President of the Kansas State Teacher’s Association, Pres. Of the Jo. Co. Retired School Personnel, Pres. Of the P.V. Optimist Club, Deacon at the Village Presbyterian Church, Deacon at the Presbyterian Church of Stanley, Pres. Of the United Way campaign of Jo. Co. He was inducted in the Kansas Teacher’s Hall of Fame in 2003.
Norman is survived by his daughter, Jacqueline Crumpler, daughter in law, Marilyn Babcock, grandchildren, Kim Davis and J.D. Crumpler, and his three great grandchildren, Lauren, Brooke and Luke Davis.
