Norman Capps

Norman Leroy Capps was born April 11, 1936 in Avondale, MO to Roy and Dixie (Stepp) Capps. Norman went to be with his Lord and Savior on September 10, 2017 at Monterey Village, Lawrence, KS.
A service to celebrate his life will be held Friday, September 15th at 11:00am at the Wesleyan Chapel at the Church of the Resurrection, 13720 Roe Avenue, Leawood, KS. A reception will follow immediately at the church.
Norman is survived by his wife of 59 years, Suzanne (Duncan) Capps, his brother Ronald Capps and his wife Debbie Capps, his brother-in-law Byron (Beep) Duncan and his wife Pat Duncan, his son Greg Capps and his wife Tammara; daughter Beth Clark and her husband Jim Clark. Norman also has 7 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
Norman was raised in North Kansas City and graduated from North Kansas City High School. In high school, he was Student Council President, a representative at Boy’s State, and a letterman in football, basketball, and baseball. During this time, he was also the League MVP in the Senior Division of the 3 & 2 baseball league.
Norman then attended the University of Missouri and Hannibal LaGrange Junior College. He played basketball at Hannibal LaGrange and football and baseball at Mizzou. He was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity.
After graduating, Norman served in the Marine Corp where he went through pilot training and became a helicopter pilot.
Norman’s professional career included almost 40 years as a Manufacturer’s Representative in the jewelry industry. Most of that time was spent with Eisenstadt Manufacturing out of St. Louis, MO. He called on clients in towns all over Kansas, Nebraska, and parts of Iowa and Missouri. He developed numerous lifetime friendships as he served his clients.
Norman was an avid and competitive golfer. He participated in the Missouri Golf Association as both a competitor and as a Rules Official. He won the MGA Father-Son tournament multiple times, shot his age every year beginning at the age of 69 (except at 71 when he had health issues), had 4 holes in one, and served as a golf coach and mentor to several young players. Perhaps his most impressive golf feat was winning the Sioux Valley Amateur multiple times with the first win being in 1970 and his final win in 1995. His wins covered a twenty five year span with his last win being at age 59.
Norman was a member at the Church of the Resurrection and very active in the Lawrence Indian United Methodist Church. He was active in numerous charitable and service organizations and was a prolific fund raiser for the causes he embraced.
