Norman Walker passed away Monday, July 02, 2007 after a brave battle with Alzheimer?s and Parkinson?s.
Norm was born in 1924 and raised in Lincoln, Nebraska. Following graduation from Nebraska High, he joined the Coast Guard and served his country 30 months in the Pacific as boat engineer on landing crafts from the invasion transport, Leonard Wood. He took part in landings on Luzon Island, Anguar, and Leyte.
Norm moved to Overland Park to join Bunge Corporation and became General Traffic Manager within a year. His incredible knowledge of the grain business, sterling character, low-key approach to problems but firm against some of the best railroad attorneys in the country, willingness to listen to others, and mentor to many, earned him the title of ?Dean of Transportation?.
Norm loved the outdoors, walking 4 miles a day. He enjoyed skiing, rafting, camping, golf, and fed his bird friends year round.
He is survived by his loving wife Susan; brother, James Walker; sister, Georgia Herring; and sons Jeffery and Bruce. By example, Norm helped raise Susan?s children, and is also survived by David Lee and his wife Kate, Nancy Brown and her husband Jeffrey, Lyle McAllister Jr. and his wife Joy. He was a devoted Gpa to Paul McAllister, Jr.; Jordan, Ashley, Taylor, Jake, and Natalie Brown; Mac III and Catie McAllister; Ben Pryor and Angela Stitt. Our deepest appreciation to the many friends who walked that extra mile!
A memorial service celebrating Norman?s life will be held 1:00 p.m. Monday, July 9th at D. W. Newcomer?s Sons Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf, Overland Park, Kansas with a gathering of family and friends following the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Grace Hospice in honor of Norman Walker, 9233 Ward Parkway, Suite 201, Kansas City, Missouri 64114.
