Mr. Orville "Mack" Matney

December 29, 1934 — April 29, 2011

Orville “Mack” Maclelland Matney, of Stilwell, KS, died peacefully in his home surrounded by his loved ones at 9:20 a.m. on 4/29/2011. Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. on Monday, 5/2, at D.W. Newcomer’s Funeral Chapel, College and Metcalf, Overland Park, KS. Graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, 5/3, at Aubry Cemetery, 191st and Metcalf, Stilwell.

Mack was born 12/29/1934 in Kansas City, KS. He was preceded in death by his brother, Cosby Dalton Jr., of KCK, and his parents, Bessie Farabee and Cosby Matney, also of KCK.

Mack was a Marine Reservist in the 1950s stationed at Camp Pendleton and was a proud member of Teamsters Local 41. He worked at Shock Transfer for 35 years and loved driving his big rig, often boasting upon retirement that he had logged more than a million miles. Mack was also a carpenter and built a number of homes throughout the KC area.

Mack loved to work, and never turned down an opportunity to improve his life and that of his family. He never met a stranger and was generous with his time and resources to anyone who needed a helping hand. Mack is survived by his wife of 57 years, Carolyn Matney of Stilwell, and his three daughters, Brenda Matney and Karen Kennedy, Stilwell, and Darla Matney, Overland Park. Mack is also survived by his son-in-law Tom Kennedy, Stilwell. Mack’s pride and joy were his five surviving grandchildren: Nicole Blackwell (spouse Evan Blackwell), Olathe, KS; John Terry (spouse Jessica Terry), Cleveland, MO; Megan Lane (spouse Tom Lane), Stanley; Jennifer Terry, Knoxville, TN; and Mackenna Hayes, Stilwell. Mack also had great-grandchildren, Thomas, Ava and Truman, of Stanley; and Drew, Olathe. Mack is also survived by his siblings, Ruth Reeves, Sacramento, CA; Sally Pierce, KCK; and Clyde Matney, Overland Park.

Mack was truly one of a kind. All who knew and loved him will miss his quick wit, hard work ethic and tenacious persevering spirit, which we will celebrate until we join him. He was the source of great love and fierce devotion to family and friends alike.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to KC Hospice.
