PATRICIA JOANN MATHEWS


Patricia Joann Mathews, age 84, of Overland Park, Kansas, died on June 14, 2010. Memorial services will be held on Thursday, June 17 at 2:30pm at The Church of the Resurrection, Wesley Chapel, 13720 Roe Ave., Leawood, Ks. Patty was born on St Patrick's Day 1926 to Frank and Marie Piffer, their only child. They lived in Indianola, Iowa for her first 8 years, then moved to Kansas City, Mo. She graduated from Paseo High School, and in 1948 from Kansas State University with a degree in medical technology. She married her grade school friend (Dr Robert M. Mathews MD), whose life they shared together for 55 years. Patty presided over school PTAs, the Johnson County Medical Auxillary, Pi Beta Phi sorority, and the OP Ladies 9- hole golfers. She also served at The Village and Colonial Presbyterian Churches, and was most recently a member of the Church of the Resurrection. Her greatest delight was her 14 years volunteering for Audio Reader Network in Lawrence, Ks, where she read local and eastern Kansas newspapers live on radio to the visually impaired, and was a member of their Development Committee. Her husband (Bob) and son (Mark) preceded her in death. She is survived by son Dr David Mathews MD (wife Cindi), and granddaughters Kim (Tony Erisman) and Lindsay Mathews, and great-grandson Matthew Dean Erisman. She loved her animal friends: Domino I and II, Honey Girl I and II, and Honey Bear. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to Audio Reader Network, P.O. Box 847, Lawrence, Ks, 66044.
