PATRICIA “PAT” ANDERSON CARROLL
Patricia “Pat” Anderson Carroll, 93, of Overland Park, KS went to heaven on April 26, 2016. Before her death she struggled with congestive heart failure. Preceding her in death were her beloved husband, Middleton “Mid” Scott Carroll, her mother Nelle McVay Anderson and her uncle Dale McVay. She is survived by her loving family: daughters, Valeree Sue and Pamela Dale Carroll (John A. Holtsclaw); grandchildren: Theresa Quantz, John Holtsclaw and Alexander S. Carroll and five great grandchildren: Lillianna (Lilli), Anabella and Andrew Quantz, Shannon and Jonathan Holtsclaw and Melodie Carroll.
Pat was born in Kansas City, Missouri and attended elementary schools in the Kansas City Missouri School District (E.C. White and Longfellow) and graduated from Westport High School. She enjoyed acting. In her senior year, she was cast in a lead role in the play “Arsenic and Old Lace.” During the summer months Pat traveled with her mother, who was a teacher in the KCMSD and was working on her teaching degree. They spent several summers at K.U. in Lawrence and Columbia University in New York. While in New York, Pat enrolled in dancing classes to pass the time when her mother was in class. She and her mother lived in one-room apartments during the school year but had to give up their “home” and store their possessions until they returned to Kansas City in the fall and found another place to live for the next school year.
Pat had an opportunity to become a professional dancer but her mother suggested Teaching might be a more suitable career so Pat attended college at the University of Missouri and earned a B.S. and M.A. in Education and later earned a Specialist Degree in Reading from UMKC.
Pat met and fell in love with Mid on a blind date at an M.U. Barn Warming Dance. They married in 1945 when he returned from World War II and lived in Kansas City, Mo where she taught in the KCMSD. They later moved their family to Prairie Village, KS. Mid retired in 1983 and Pat retired soon after. She became a Docent at the William Rockhill Nelson Art Gallery. She also interested Mid in dancing. They enjoyed 30 winters in Pharr, Texas where they square and round danced and met many wonderful friends. As a hobby, Pat made her own square dance dresses and made Mid matching shirts. They loved each other and were best friends, often seen holding hands as they walked along. They celebrated 70 years of marriage last June. Memorial service will be 10 AM Wednesday, May 4 at Johnson County Chapel, Overland Park, Kansas. Memorial contributions are suggested to Village Presbyterian Church, Flower Ministry, 6641 Mission Rd., Prairie Village, KS 66208 or to St. Luke’s South Hospice, 12300 Metcalf, Overland Park, KS 66213.
