Patrick McGinty, age 50, died on Sunday, August 7, 2016. Patrick was a beloved member of the L’Arche Heartland community for the past 27 years, as well as a pillar among the developmental disability community of Johnson County, Kansas. To have met Patrick once was to be forever changed by his endearing compliments and his beautiful spirit.
Patrick loved attending Catholic mass and sharing his singing voice with the congregation. He also felt a special connection with religious sisters and loved spending time with the Sisters of Charity in Leavenworth, Kansas. The annual Faith and Sharing retreat at the University of Saint Mary’s was one of the highlights of his year as he visited his friends and walked the grounds of the motherhouse.
In fall of 2015 Patrick was diagnosed with cancer. He was a steadfast symbol of optimism and joy as he worked with medical professionals to heal. Over the past six months Patrick’s strength was inspirational as he continued to enjoy all his favorite activities, even taking a vacation to St. Louis this Spring. During the past two weeks he started experiencing a decline in health and entered the hospital last weekend. The daily life members of L’Arche Heartland were able to hold vigil for Patrick on Saturday evening at Saint Luke’s Hospital, a chance to gather in prayer for Patrick and to say goodbye. Patrick passed Sunday morning holding his mother’s hand surrounded by his father as well as his L’Arche Heartland family.
Pat is survived by his parents Bill and LaVonne McGinty, his sister Suzanne, and his niece and nephew. The family will have a private, family-only funeral in order to grieve their loss and say goodbye to Patrick. Recognizing the countless number of people that Pat has touched in his life, a Celebration of Life for Patrick’s community and friends will be held at a later time. If you would like to receive information about attending the Celebration of Life please email heartland@larcheks.org
