Pearl Thorp

Pearl was a lifelong Johnson County, Kansas native. She died at the age of 98 on July 31, 2018 at Addington Place of Prairie Village, Kansas where she had been a resident since October 2017.

Pearl was born on December 16, 1919 to Aaron and Alice Allison on a farm which was at the time located southwest of Olathe, Kansas.

Pearl graduated from Olathe High School in 1939 and married Lloyd Thorp in 1940 in the family farm home. Lloyd was a Civil Engineer who worked a lot of Defense work before he went into the Navy as a Lieutenant. Pearl always tried to be near Lloyd where he was stationed and spent a large amount of her time volunteering by folding bandages for the Red Cross and assisting in any other areas where she could be helpful.

After WW 11, Pearl and her husband settled in Kansas City where Lloyd was a Structural Engineer. Later Lloyd had his own professional office at 7301Mission Road in Prairie Village. Pearl was a homemaker but found time to assist Lloyd by making copiers of plans and running many errands for her husband.

Pearl and Lloyd moved to Prairie Village in 1950 into a new JC Nichols home. They chose their home as it was being built and there are many letters between them and Mr. Nichols regarding the building of their home. Pearl and Lloyd joined the Village Presbyterian Church where they both were very active members. Both volunteered by teaching Sunday School and Pearl sang in the Choir for 45 years, she was an active member of Presbyterian Women and, as long as she could be, was very active in Mission Sewing. Pearl was a Boy Scout mother and, for many years, a member of the Western Chapter Auxiliary of the Missouri Society of Professional Engineers.

After Lloyd died, Pearl worked at the Jones Store, Shawnee Mission East Cafeteria and Lakeview Retirement Center as hostess in the dining room. She traveled extensively to China, Australia, New Zealand and Canada, she and her youngest sister also traveled to Austria .

Pearl was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd, her daughter, Kathy, her grandson, Jonathan. She is survived by her son, Tom and his wife, Sandy, her three children David (Lisa) Meditz of San Antonio, Texas, Michelle (Rusty) Koos of Wellsville, Kansas, and Jessica (Brandon) Porter of Overland Park, Kansas. Pearl has six great grandchildren Rachel and Nicole Meditz, Amelia and Jackson Koos, and Grayson and Oliver Porter.

Pearl believed strongly in the Power of prayer and in the need to serve by helping and assisting others.

A funeral service will be held at 10 AM on Saturday, August 11, at Village Presbyterian Church, 6641 Mission Rd, Prairie Village, KS 66208, with reception following. Burial will follow the reception at Johnson County Memorial Gardens, 11200 Metcalf Ave, Overland Park, KS 66210.
