Phyllis MacNaughton, age 81, passed away peacefully on November 22nd, 2008.
Phyllis was born April 1st, 1927, in Honolulu, HI and came to the mainland to complete her Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry in 1949 at St. Teresa's College in Winona, MN. She moved to Kansas City and completed training as a Medical Technologist at St. Joseph Hospital where she worked until 1962. She married Dr. Ralph MacNaughton in 1962 and was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, volunteer, ardent supporter of the arts and education, incredible cook, and generous and beloved friend to many. She was phenomenal in how she overcame much hardship in her life and did so with grace.
Phyllis is preceded in death by her parents, Masaichi and Toyoko Murotake of Honolulu, HI, her brothers, James Murotake of Honolulu, HI, George Murotake of San Francisco, CA and sister, Jane Nakamura of Honolulu, HI, and her grandson, Devon Hance of Leawood, KS. Survivors include her husband, Dr. Ralph MacNaughton of Overland Park, KS; her brother, Robert Murotake of Leavenworth, KS; her children: Dr. Mary MacNaughton and husband, Karl Foss of Leawood, KS; Mr. Paul MacNaughton and wife, Emily Holman MacNaughton of Olathe, KS; Ms. Eileen MacNaughton and husband, Chris Beaty of Portales, NM; Dr. Kathleen MacNaughton Hance and husband, Kirk Hance of Leawood, KS and 11 remaining grandchildren; loving caregiver of five years, Ms. Margaret Ramey, of Kansas City, KS. The family would like to extend special thanks to Ms. Ramey and the wonderful staff at Villa St. Joseph as well as the members of Odyssey Hospice.
Visitation for Phyllis will start at 9 a.m., followed by a memorial service held Wednesday, November 26th, 2008 at 11 a.m., at Johnson County Funeral Home, 11200 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, KS 66210. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in Phyllis' name to one of the following organizations that Phyllis supported: Kansas City Youth Symphony; KXTR 1660 AM Classical Music Station; National Public Radio; SIDS Resources, Inc.; and the Sisters of St. Joseph.
