Phyllis J. Raible, age 88, of Overland Park, Kansas, died peacefully at home on Tuesday, December 11, 2007, surrounded by loving family and friends.
Phyllis was born on August 21, 1919, in Kansas City, Missouri. She spent much of her childhood in Beatrice, Nebraska, and Blue Springs, Nebraska, graduating from high school in Blue Springs, NE, in 1937. She moved to Kansas City after graduation, and, shortly thereafter, accepted an offer to work for three weeks at the West End Hotel in the Kansas City Stockyards, where she ended up staying for almost 18 years. She was actively involved in the extensive clean-up following the Great Flood of 1951, which devastated the Stockyards. In 1955, she married John F. Raible and gave birth to a daughter in 1956. She volunteered extensively in the health rooms of her daughter?s schools. From the early 1950s until the late 1980s, she lived in Independence, Missouri. She then lived in Mission, Kansas until early 2002, when she moved to Lamar Court Assisted Living, where she lived until her death. She was elected vice-president of the Lamar Court Resident Council in 2002, and, more recently, served as a facility ambassador, a position that she cherished. She and her dear friend, Richard Kempster, were voted Queen and King of Lamar Court in the fall of 2007. Phyllis and Richard brought great joy to one another over the last five years.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband, John F. Raible, in 1985. Survivors include her daughter, Dr. Michele D. Raible (Dr. William S. Miles), of Grayslake, Illinois, several nieces and nephews, and many dear friends. Although she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1950, she never allowed this disease to diminish her enthusiasm for life and for people. Phyllis was a grand and loving lady, who will be remembered for her outgoing personality, her great love of animals, and her ever-present smile. She will be missed by all who knew her. Her daughter and son-in-law would like to thank the wonderful staff and residents at Lamar Court, who helped make the last years of her life so rewarding, rich, and fun.
A memorial service will be held at Lamar Court Assisted Living, 11909 Lamar Avenue, at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 19, 2007. Burial will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Raytown, Missouri. Visitation will be on Tuesday, December 18, 2007, from 5:30 ? 7:30 p.m. at D. W. Newcomer?s Sons Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf, Overland Park, Kansas. Memorial contributions may be made to City Union Mission, 1100 East 11th Street, Kansas City, Missouri 64106, or to the Humane Society of Greater Kansas City, 5445 Parallel Parkway, Kansas City, Kansas 66104.
