Powell Campbell Groner, Jr.
October 1, 1921 – February 24th, 2013

Powell C. Groner, Jr., 91, passed away February 24th, 2013 at Kingswood Senior Living Community. He was born in New York City, but lived most of his life in the Kansas City area. He attended Pembroke-Country Day School, now Pembroke Hill, and graduated from Dartmouth College in 1943. He was a pilot in the Naval Air Corps during World War II, training in Pensacola, Florida and Corpus Christi, Texas. He was stationed in San Diego while in the Navy Reserves during the Korean War.

Powell spent most of his business career with Western Auto Supply Co. in its Kansas City headquarters. He also worked for many years as a volunteer with the United Campaign, and was the Men's Division Chair in 1966. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Island Inn Corporation of Sanibel, Florida, and of Family and Children's Services locally. He was a president of the Kansas City Seniors Golf Association and a member of the Kansas City Country Club.

Powell loved playing golf, watching golf, and teaching his sons to play golf. He had a keen intelligence, an irrepressible sense of humor, and an astonishing repertoire of bad puns. He loved to have dinner and share stories with a full table of family and friends. He was a true gentleman – generous, kind, and gracious to everyone he met. He will be sorely missed and fondly remembered.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Helen Underwood Groner, and is survived by his sons P. Campbell Groner, III, of Portland, Oregon; Christopher W. Groner, M.D., of Elkin, North Carolina; Cary U. Groner of El Sobrante, California; and five grandchildren: Ross Carson-Groner, Kate Carson-Groner, Christine James, Lauren Groner and Geoffrey Groner. The family offers heartfelt thanks to the staff at Kingswood for the dedication and affection with which they cared for Powell.

A memorial service will be held at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, Kansas on Saturday, March 23rd at 4 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to the United Way of Greater Kansas City or to the charity of the donor's choice.
