Prudence (Prudy) Jane Boan, 60, passed away at home Sunday afternoon, June 24, 2007, in Overland Park, Kansas after many years of struggling with Multiple Sclerosis.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 28th, 2007 at D.W. Newcomer?s Sons Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf, Overland Park, KS 66210; and burial in Johnson County Memorial Gardens. Prudy was born June 17, 1947, in Red Oak, Iowa; the daughter of Edward B. Boan and Helen M. Boan. Her family relocated to Fairway, Kansas in 1961, and Prudy graduated from Shawnee Mission North H.S. in 1965. She received an athletic scholarship to study at Baker University in Baldwin City, KS, and graduated in 1969 from Baker with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education and Health; and later received her Master?s degree in Education from Central Missouri State University in 1981. At Baker, she earned athletic letters in volleyball, basketball, softball and other intramural activities; and was a member of the Phi Mu Sorority. Prudy earned a number of local, regional and national awards, including Teenage Athlete of the Year Award for the Kansas City area (1965); Baker Woman Athlete of the Year (1968); Outstanding Young Educator Award, Baldwin City School District (1971); Professional Disabled Woman of the Year Award for Overland Park (1985); Baker Alumni Citation (1986); Excellence in Teaching Award nominee, Greater Kansas City area (1987); National Volleyball Coaching Award by Scholastic Coach Magazine (1987); Inspiration Award by the National Association for Sports and Recreation (1988); Multiple Sclerosis Achievement Award, Kansas City area (1989); Region V MS Achievement Award (1990); and National Finalist for MS Achievement Award (1990). From 1965 thru 1977 she was active in Women?s Fast-Pitch Softball and International Basketball competitions. Prudy was later inducted as the first woman ever into Baker University?s Athletic Hall of Fame. Prudy taught school at Baldwin City, Kansas High School for two years; taught another two years at Hillcrest Junior High School in Shawnee Mission, KS, before spending the next thirty-two years teaching and coaching at Shawnee Mission West High School in Overland Park, KS, until her retirement in 2005. She was the head coach for girls? volleyball and softball at SM West H.S. for a number of years and assisted with the girls? basketball team and took her teams to state numerous times. Prudy highly motivated and inspired her young athletes all the while coaching from a wheelchair and fighting a courageous battle against MS for more than thirty years.
Prudy was preceded in death by her father, Edward B. Boan; maternal grandparents John W. and Clara M. Nelson; and paternal grandparents Edward G. and Ethel Ann Boan. Prudy is survived by her mother, Helen M. Boan of Overland Park, KS; nine siblings and their spouses: along with many other relatives and friends. Prudy was blessed with 24 nieces and nephews and 3 great nieces and nephews. Prudy will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
