Rachel Hellebuyck

Rachel H. Chavez Hellebuyck, 80, of Overland Park, passed away May 25, 2022 with her loving husband by her side.

Rachel was born to Aurelio and Angelina Chavez on July 5, 1943, in Kansas City, Missouri.  After graduating from Redemptorist High School in 1959 she worked as a candy striper at St. Mary’s hospital.  Other jobs included Four Winds Restaurant, at the downtown airport, and Gas Service Company.  In 1997 she retired from Hallmark Cards after 21 years.

In 1975 She met the love of her life, Robert Hellebuyck and they wed in 1979.  Rachel lived a full life.  She loved spending time with family and friends and never missed a family celebration.  Rachel enjoyed traveling, watching movies, cheering KU basketball, and collecting ornaments and other keepsakes.  Even though she raised no children of her own, she treasured her nieces and nephews and was central to their lives.

Rachel was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Michael and Santos Chavez.  She is survived by her husband Robert Hellebuyck, brothers Enrique Chavez (Barbara), Fred Chavez (Gina), sisters, Mary Estrada (Henry) and Alicia Chavez.  Rachel will be fondly remembered by many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and many good friends with special mention of lifelong friend Shirley Oyer.
