Rachel M. Sears, 89, Lee’s Summit, MO, died peacefully in her sleep on Monday, May 22, 2017 at 2:40 am. Rachel was born in Yates Center, KS on October 9, 1927. Rachel grew up on a farm in Leavenworth County during the Great Depression. She was raised in a family of eight children, six brothers and one sister. Rachel attended a one room school house, K-8, and when she was in the upper elementary grades shared her love of reading with the younger children. She became a registered nurse, graduating from the Missouri Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in 1950. Rachel spent most of her nursing career at Menorah Hospital, retiring after more than twenty years of service. Rachel met her future husband, Leslie, on a blind date, introduced to one another through mutual friends. They married in 1952 and remained so until her husband’s death in 2008.
Rachel is preceded in death by her mother and father, Dewey and Esther Bleam, three brothers, Edwin, Mervin, and Wilbert, beloved husband, Leslie Sears and her son, Brian Sears.
She is survived by her son, David, daughter-in-law, LaWanna, her granddaughters, Katie (Kyle) Perkins and Erin Blodgett, step-granddaughter, Heather Frye, and four great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held on Friday, May 26, at 11:00 am at Johnson County Memorial Gardens, 11200 Metcalf Avenue, Overland Park, KS 66210.
