Ralph E. (Gene) Fields, 80, of Overland Park, KS passed away Friday, Feb 4th, 2011.
Gene was born Sept 17th, 1930, to Edith and Ralph Fields in Springfield, MO. As a young man, he ventured to Alameda, CA, and became manager of Karl’s Shoe Store. Joined by his childhood sweetheart, Lura Lee, they married and started a family.
Gene returned to the Midwest where he began his career in sales with Foremost Foods. He became manager of the Foremost plant in Leavenworth, KS, and also owned and operated the local skating rink. As a member of the Elks Org., he became Exalted Ruler, the youngest to achieve the prestigious role. Gene’s career took him to Topeka, KS, and then to Kansas City as Regional Sales Manager over a four state area. He later married Donna J. Russell and between them, they shared five children; Debbie, Kurt, Linda, John and Mary, 13 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and a nephew, Jack E. Fields, and two great nieces.
Gene’s retirement from Foremost, led him into the grocery business as owner of the Overland Park Thriftway store. He later went into commercial real estate for Victor Ross & Sons, before retiring.
Gene was preceded in death by his wife, Donna, and his brother, Bill.
A visitation will be held Tuesday, Feb 8th, from 1 to 2 P.M. with a funeral service to follow at D.W. Newcomer’s Sons Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf, OP, KS, 66210. Interment will be in Johnson County Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to donor’s favorite charity in memory of Gene.
