Mr Ray Everhart

December 7, 1919 — July 17, 2012

Lt. Col. Ret. US Air Force Ray S. Everhart, of Overland Park, took his last flight home July 17, 2012. He was 92 years old. Born to Oscar and Daisy Everhart on December 7, 1919, Ray was one of three boys and two girls. The day Ray was born a Wright Brothers' plane flew over their home, leading Daisy to comment that "this boy would fly one of those machines." And he did. Before military service, Ray received his degree from Brevard College, NC. At Brevard, Ray received his pilot's license. Ray enlisted in the Army Air Corp (now US Air Force) in 1941. On his birthday in 1941, Ray provided transport to Hawaii: Pearl Harbor had been bombed. Ray flew World War II missions out of North Africa and South Pacific. He was shot down over the Mediterranean Sea, and hidden by the underground until rescued by a British war ship. While waiting for re-deployment, Ray taught aeronautics and basic training at Reese Air Force Base in Lubbock, TX. There he met and married the love of his life, Bee W. Everhart. From 1941 to 1963, Ray actively flew transporters, cargoes, refuelers, and bombers. Ray also flew the Berlin Air Lift. Ray participated in the Air Space project (now NASA ) at Langley AF Base, VA. He retired from the Air Force in 1963, when he started his second career with John Hancock Life Ins.
Ray and Bee were married 60 years, before Bee passed away in 2005. The couple have three daughters: Marilyn Hyatt, Wake Forest, NC; Pamela Zelner (Husband Perry) San Antonio, TX, Sheila Yaeger, (Husband Carl) Overland Park, and two grandchildren Kim Morrison, and Darrell Hyatt. Ray is also survived by his sister Bertie Sexton of Thomasville, NC.
Ray was a quiet, loving and polite man. He never complained. We will miss his quick smile, attentive ear and kind heart. God gave us the best Dad ever! Funeral services will be held Monday, July 23, 2012 @ 11am @ Johnson County Funeral Chapel, 11200 Metcalf Ave, Overland Park, KS. Visitation begins @ 10:30am. In lieu of flowers, we encourage memorial gifts to: Hope for Heroes, care of Yaeger Architecture, Inc.7780 W. 119th, OP, KS 66213. This non-profit benefits wounded soldiers and airmen.
