Raymond L. Hein entered eternal life on December 23, 2008.
Ray was born in St. Peter, Minnesota, on September 25, 1917, to Hugo and Marie Bloche Hein. He was baptized into the Christian faith on October 14, 1917, at St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church. The family spoke German and he entered grade school in 1924, worried that he would not know enough English to attend school. Raymond was confirmed in Christ on March 29, 1931. He graduated from St. Peter High School in 1937. He completed a course at Mankato Commercial College and began a career with Standard Oil Company in 1941. Soon after, he was drafted into the Army Air Corps where he served as an airplane mechanic on C-47 and C-46 cargo planes. During World War II, Raymond served in Karachi, India, and Bergstrom Air Force Base, Austin, Texas. There he met his wife, Ruby Pittsford, to whom he was married for 61 years. After returning from the war, he again returned to Standard Oil Company in Minnesota where he worked until his retirement in 1978. Raymond, Ruby, and their three daughters moved from Minnesota to Overland Park, Kansas, in 1967. They were faithful members of Bethany Lutheran Church, Overland Park. Raymond was a gardener, record keeper, lover of household projects, and a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He will be greatly missed but his example of patience, excellence, and faithfulness will be remembered by his family.
Raymond is survived by his wife, Ruby; daughters Sharon Bartels and husband Jeff, St. Paul, Minnesota; Linda Kettner and husband Ron, Shawnee, Kansas; Diane Schoettlin and husband Karl, Lenexa, Kansas; seven grandchildren, Sarah, Jeff, Mike, Lauren, David, Christopher, and Andrew; and two great-grandchildren, Grady and Regan.
A visitation will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 27th at Bethany Lutheran Church, 9101 Lamar, Overland Park, Kansas with funeral services following at 2:00 p.m. The family requests contributions in Raymond’s name be made to Bethany Lutheran Church.
