Mr. Raymond Hurn

Raymond Walter Hurn, longtime Johnson County resident, died Jan. 20th, 2007. He was 85.

Raymond was born in Ontario, Oregon on June 27, 1921 to Rev. Walter and Bertha Hurn. H e also lived in Kingman, KS and Nampa, ID. He graduated from Bethany Peniel College (now Southern Nazarene University) in Oklahoma City with a degree in philosophy and religion. He met and married Madelyn Kirkpatrick in Hutchison, KS in 1941 and went on to pastor for 16 years in Hays, KS, Tulsa, OK, Atlanta, GA, Norman, OK and Medford, OR. In Hays, he also served as a city scoutmaster and was a member of the Lions Club. In Norman, he was chairman of United Way as well as chaplain to the largest mental hospital in Oklahoma. He also organized the first Nazarene student union on the campus of Oklahoma University. In Medford, he held a weekly radio broadcast in addition to pastoring. He became a District Superintendent of the West Texas District for 9 years before moving to Kansas City to direct the Department of Home Missions at Nazarene Headquarters for 17 years which included 8 years of administration of overseas home missions. As a life-long learner, he completed graduate classes at Tulsa University, Oklahoma University, and Fuller Theological Seminary. In 1967, he received a Doctor of Divinity from Southern Nazarene University. Dr. Hurn was well-known for his work in the area of church growth and development of urban/ethnic outreach programs for the Church of the Nazarene and other denominations. He received the Church Growth Executive Award in 1980. He served as program chairman for Houston '85- Consultation on Evangelical Ethnic America which accommodated 37 denominations. He wrote 'Unleashing the Lay Potential in the Sunday School', 'Mission: Possible', 'Finding Your Ministry', 'Black Evangelism', 'Which Way From Here?', 'Spiritual Gifts Workshop', 'Mission Action Sourcebook', 'The Rising Tide; New Church for the New Millennium' and was editor of 'Mission Alert', a publication generated from his Department of Home Missions assignment at Nazarene Headquarters. In 1985, he retired from the Department of Home Missions and moved to Colorado Springs. In that same summer, he was elected to serve as General Superintendent of the Church of the Nazarene, the highest elective office in the Church, where he served for 8 years. He retired from that position in 1993. Dr. Hurn and his wife, Madelyn, have resided in the Kansas City area since 1968. They spent 3 years in Colorado Springs but returned to Overland Park soon after he was elected Gen. Superintendent.

Ray leaves his devoted wife, Madelyn, his 2 daughters, Connie Isbell and Jacque Oliver of Overland Park, his grandchildren Baraq Isbell of St. Louis, Amy Russell of Overland Park, Danielle Prince of Overland Park and his great grandson, Thomas Prince. He also leaves his sister, Helen Ogburn and her husband, Jack of Nevada, MO, his brother, Ed and his wife Dolores of Nampa, ID, sister-in-law Marge Hurn of Tucson, AZ, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Bertha Hurn and his younger brother, Paul. Ray was a member of Kansas City First Church of the Nazarene. In his healthier days, he enjoyed a good game of golf or a fishing or hunting trip. Ray and his family enjoyed many fishing trips to the mountains when they lived in Oregon. They spent memorable trips trolling on Diamond Lake where Ray baited many a hook for his girls. In his later years, he loved the family trips to Breckenridge, CO or the Spring visits to Branson.

Visitation will be at D.W. Newcomer's Johnson County Memorial Gardens, 11200 Metcalf from 5:30-7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2007 with private entombment following. Memorial services will be held at Kansas City First Church of the Nazarene, 119th and State Line Road, at 11 a.m. on Wed., Jan. 24, 2007. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Care of Kansas, the Kansas City Rescue Mission, or the Ministerial Scholarship Fund at Southern Nazarene University.
