Raymond "Ray" Gerlinger

Raymond “Ray” E. Gerlinger was called to Heaven on December 4, 2016. He was born in Alexander, ND on March 25, 1923 to Raymond E. Gerlinger, Sr., and Anna Odland Gerlinger. He grew up in Minot, ND where he was active in Boy Scouting. He attended Augsburg College in Minneapolis, MN for two years before entering the U.S. Navy. Upon discharge from the Navy, he attended Minot State Teachers College and Minot, ND and graduated in 1947 with a business degree. On March 30, 1947, he married his wife of 69 years, Elaine. After graduation, he worked for the Boy Scouts and later in the retail furniture business. In 1951, he became co-owner of a furniture store in Milaca, MN. In 1959, he went to work for Inter-Collegiate Press in Merriam, KS. He worked in the printing industry both in Kansas City and in Ann Arbor, MI, until he retired in 1990.
He was a member of Hillcrest Covenant Church and participated in the choir, served on the Deacon’s Board, helped with grounds maintenance as a part of the “Hillcrest Clippers” and helped count offering proceeds for many years. Ray was an avid swimmer and swam six days a week for forty years. He loved working in his yard. From 1990 until March of 2016, Ray and Elaine lived in Hawthorne Place where Ray was active with the homes association. In addition to his wife, Elaine, Ray is survived by his daughter Cathy Zumbehl (Glenn), his son Rick (Sheri), and his granddaughters Anne Zumbehl Talley (Matt), Sarah Zumbehl Ozanne (Tyler), Megan Gerlinger Shankland (Daniel) and Emma Gerlinger. Ray is also survived by four great-grandchildren, Lila and Luke Talley and Callan and Tucker Shankland. He was preceded in death by his parents, by his sister, Daphlyn Holland, and by his daughter-in-law, Cindy. Ray was a kind and gentle man. He was a man of great integrity who was committed to his faith in Jesus Christ. He was a loyal friend and a devoted husband, father and grandfather. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to missions projects at Hillcrest Covenant Church. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, December 8, at Hillcrest Covenant Church, 8801 Nall Avenue, Prairie Village, KS.
