Reat Griffin Lloyd Underwood (Losen) was born on May 21, 1999 in Norman, OK to parents Mindy Corporon and Gary Underwood. For the first ten months of his life, he was his grandfather's first priority. Reat was a precocious toddler who could recite Eric Carle books at the age of two. Even then, he loved to sing and dance.
Reat moved with Mindy to Overland Park, Kansas in 2000. As an infant he met Len Losen, who would become his father figure, mentor, and biggest fan. Reat was ring bearer for his Uncle Tony's wedding and his Mom, Mindy's marriage to Len in 2001.
Reat's love of theater came naturally to him. When he would stay with his grandparents, Popeye and YeaYea, he attended many theatrical rehearsals and productions. With that training, Reat began his theatre career at age four in Camelot Academy as the Baby Elephant Bird in a production of "Seussical the Musical". He had many more adventures in "Annie", "Peter Pan", "Willy Wonka", "Damn Yankees" "Suessical the Musical"(as JoJo) and, as a freshman in "Guys and Dolls". Although Reat played baseball, basketball and football, he loved to SING! Reat was proud and prepared to begin his summer as a member of Starlight Stars and had been chosen for the cast of "Tom Sawyer" playing in July 2014.
Reat's love of the outdoors and Scouting did not come easy, but grew exponentially. Reat also loved spending time with his grandfather (William L. Corporon "Popeye") in the great outdoors. As a baby, and toddler Reat and Popeye took long walks on Popeye's farm learning about nature. As a teenager, Reat and Popeye went hunting together, enjoying each other's company in the presence of God's creations.
Carrying on the traditions of his grandfather and uncles, Reat was a Cub Scout with Pack 3097 at Blue Valley Middle School and then a Boy Scout with Troop 37 (Red Tailed Hawk District) where he reached Life Scout. Although, during his first camping trip rained buckets and his tent had a hole in it, his tenacity prevailed and scouting and the outdoors became one of his greatest joys. He was preparing for his Eagle Boards with Troop 92 (Trail Head District) to be held in May 2014.
Ever willing to volunteer, Reat dedicated his life to Christ as a camper at Kanakuk the summer of 2011, and offered his time as a KIDS-COR volunteer (United Methodist Church of the Resurrection), especially in the baby toddler room. And, as a freshman at Blue Valley High School in Overland Park, Reat was always ready to greet friends and teachers with a quick and sincere smile or, more often, a hug.
Reat and Popeye left for Heaven together on April 13, 2014. Reat is survived by his parents, Mindy Corporon and Len Losen, Jr.; his brother, Lukas Losen; and Gary Underwood. He is also survived by his Grandmother, Melinda A. Corporon (aka "Yea Yea"); Grandparents Leonard and Katherine Losen. Reat was preceded in passing by his Grandmother, Freeda Edwards. He is also survived by his Uncles, Will (Heather) Corporon, Tony (Dana) Corporon and Ken (Barbara) Losen; very special cousins, Travis, Hayden, Alli, Brandon, Hanna, Zsa Zsa, Sam, Maggie, Andrew, Katy and Olivia, and many more loving relatives.
A Celebration of Reat's Life will be held at 3:00 PM Friday, April 18, 2014 at The United Methodist Church of the Resurrection, 13720 Roe Ave., Leawood, Kansas 66224. A gathering for family and friends will take place immediately following the service, also at the church.
