Crouch, Rex E., 86, of Overland Park, KS passed away Monday, Nov. 12, 2007 at Shawnee Mission Medical Center.
Rex was born on June 12, 1921 near Granby, MO. He spent his youth hunting and fishing in the rolling hills of southwest MO before moving to California in the early 1940?s. During World War II, Rex worked for Consolidated and North America Aviation, designing parts for the B-24 heavy and B-25 medium bombers. After the war, Rex moved to Kansas City and began work as a mechanical engineer for Benson Manufacturing Company. Shortly thereafter he met and married Elfrieda Wendt, his wife of 60 years. During his tenure at Benson, Rex designed various parts for the Mercury capsule, America?s first spacecraft. He also received recognition from NASA for his design contribution to the Saturn moon rocket. Rex finished his career as an engineer with Stelco, designing aerial lifts. Rex was an accomplished residential builder, designing and building custom homes in Johnson County. In his spare time, Rex enjoyed sculpting figurines and numerous other home d?cor items from wood. Rex was an active member of the community, serving as Scout Master of Troop 290, and a 3&2 baseball coach. Rex was a member of the Holy Cross Lutheran Church. Rex will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lyle and Esther and his brother Bill. He is survived by his wife, his sons; Bill and his wife Donna, Doug and his wife Kathy; brother, Marvin and his wife Rita and five grandchildren; Jeff and his wife Ashley, Brian, Brent Julie and Haley.
Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15 at D.W. Newcomer?s Sons Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf. Visitation will be from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. prior to the service. Memorial Gifts may be made to Holy Cross Lutheran Church or to the Lutheran Braille Workers.
