Richard E. Gardner, born to Fred “Bud” Gardner and Mildred Marie Gardner, died October 28, 2022 at 6:00 AM at the age of 78. He is survived by his wife, Beverly Sue (Old) Gardner, of 54 years, daughter Carrie L. (Brian) Pillsbury, his son, Scott E. (Lisa) Gardner, his sister Sandra M. McCune, his grandsons, Nicholas Pillsbury, Samuel E. Gardner, and Gabriel J. Gardner, as well as many friends.
Richard was a 1962 graduate of Shawnee Mission East. He joined the Navy in 1963 and was honorably discharged in 1968. He served on the USS Galveston (CLG-3), the US Navy’s first long range guided missile cruiser.
Richard was a machinist and a supervisor at Bendix/Honeywell in K.C., MO for 42 years. He loved a good cigar and chatting with his cigar buddies. He enjoyed reading novels by Tom Clancy and others who wrote spy novels. He liked to watch the TV series “J.A.G.” and loved James Bond movies. He was an avid golfer. He loved music and had eclectic tastes, from Sly and the Family Stone to Elton John to ABBA.
