Richard Kelley

March 4, 1931 — October 8, 2022

Overland Park

On the evening of October 7, 2022, Richard “Dick” Kelley, loving husband and father of three sons and grandfather of five grandchildren, passed away at the age of 91.

Richard was born on March 4, 1931 in Kansas City, MO to Millard and Helen (Sackman) Kelley. He graduated from Paseo High School in 1949, joined the Navy in March of 1951 as a radioman, and served aboard the USS Henrico (APA-45) until his Honorable discharge in February, 1955. After returning to Kansas City, Richard worked at the Bendix plant on Bannister Road where he met his wife Linda (Caine) Kelley and raised three sons over their 50-year marriage.

Richard worked in the construction management industry, overseeing multiple retail and corporate projects in Midwestern states. During this time, he obtained his pilot’s license for work-related travel and short recreational trips with family and friends. Among those who knew him, Richard was a “jack of all trades” and could perform any aspect of home or automobile repair. His recreational interests included fishing, boating, snow- and waterskiing, camping, and wine-making. After retiring, Richard continued to pursue new experiences and taught himself sailing, hosted visits and traveled with his U.S.S Henrico reunion group, and became an accomplished golfer in Kansas City and around the couple’s summer home in Tequesta, Florida.

Richard was preceded in death by his father, mother and brother Ronald. He is survived by his wife Linda, brother Stephen C. Kelley and wife Leticia, sons Scott, Darren, Bradley and wife Jamie, and grandchildren Megan, Molly and husband Jake, Melissa, Shon, and Jordyn.

A private service was held in Overland Park. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Red Cross.
