Richard Scott “Rick” Royer died unexpectedly on Wednesday, September 26, 2018, at Overland Park Regional Medical Center in Overland Park, Kan., at the age of 67.
Rick was born on February 10, 1951 in Abilene, Kan., to Jill Peck Royer and Robert H. Royer. He graduated from Abilene High School in 1969. Rick went on to attend the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kan., earning a bachelor’s degree in Education in December 1972. He married Stephanie D. Melander, his high school sweetheart, in 1971. Rick began working as a math teacher at Shawnee Mission East High School in Prairie Village, Kan., and subsequently retired from there in 2012 after 40 years of service.
Rick is survived by his wife, Stephanie, of the home, mother-in-law, V. Chairyth Melander, Shawnee, Kan., brothers Robert H. Royer, Jr. (Jo), Abilene, Kan., Michael J. Royer (Marla), Tulsa, Okla., and Shannon Royer (Bill McTaggart), Lawrence, Kan. He was preceded in death by his parents, father-in-law D. Dale Melander, Shawnee, Kan., and brother, Charles P. (Chuck) Royer, Houston, Texas
Funeral services are scheduled at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 2, at Lutheran Church of the Resurrection, 9100 Mission Road, Prairie Village, Kan., with a reception to follow. Visitation is planned 6-7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 1, at the church. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Rick’s life.
