Richard “Dick” Otto Schmidt, Sr., 85, of Overland Park, Kansas passed away on Friday, September 10, 2010, at his home with his family beside him. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 14th from 1-2 pm at D.W. Newcomer’s Sons Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf, Overland Park, KS. Funeral services will start at 2:00 pm. Burial will follow at the Johnson County Memorial Gardens.
Born in Kansas City, Missouri in 1925, he was the son of the late Otto and Geneva Schmidt.
Following high school and in between his college years, he served in the U.S. Army in World War II and the Korean War and was honorably discharged as a 1st Lieutenant.
During high school and while attending the University of Missouri as an engineering student, Dick was a highly honored track athlete specializing in the quarter mile.
While attending the University of Missouri, he met and married Mary Jane “Jane” Stone, a journalism student who held the title of Miss Missouri. They were married on December 4, 1949. They have lived most of their married lives in the Kansas City metropolitan area.
For nearly 50 years, Dick worked his way up the corporate ladder at the Carswell Manufacturing Company where he succeeded his father as the Chairman, President and CEO in 1973. He had dozens of inventions and patents to his credit.
Dick had a natural love for speed. He designed and built race cars for his son and him. He flew airplanes both commercially and privately and he owned several boats during his lifetime. But he most enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his wife Jane.
Dick is survived by: his wife, Jane; his three children, Richard “Ric” O. Schmidt, Jr. and his wife Gayle, Mary Christine “Chris” Kingsley and her husband Karl, and Kim Ann Michale and her husband Nick; his 6 grandchildren, Brandie Schmidt, Amanda Schmidt, Richie Kingsley, Kandice Kingsley, Kelly Michale, and Brodie Michale.
